The Sussex Wildlife Trust Youth Council was elected at the end of March 2009 and consists of 20 young people between 10-21 years old from all over Sussex.
Since being elected, they have met monthly to discuss how the Trust should work and engage with their peer group and to come up with new and exciting ideas for working with young people in Sussex. The Youth Council is keen to involve as many young people as possible in the Sussex Wildlife Trust and their activities and events. They are also exploring other innovative ways of engaging with young people, such as You Tube and social networking sites.
Young people who would like to be more involved can join the Sub Council – as a Sub Councillor you will be kept in touch with what the Youth Council are thplanning and will be eligible for election if anyone drops out of the Council. Young People can also contribute ideas by email or on the blog.
The process of setting up the Youth Council at Sussex Wildlife Trust is being funded for one year by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts and once established, may be used as a template for other Trusts around the UK to take up if they so wish.
