Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) is launching its new Youth Ranger Project based at Stanmer Park in Brighton for young people keen to gain skills in conservation.
The project - funded by The Veolia Environmental Trust, through the Landfill Communities Fund, and v, the youth volunteering charity - is for young volunteers (aged 16-25) who are interested in getting involved in conservation and improving their local environment.
On Saturday 19 January, a group of SWT’s new recruits, will be learning various bush craft skills including fire lighting, working with green wood to make tools and cooking outdoors.
The Youth Ranger Project is free for participants and will run for the next two years. After completing a “taster day”, anyone aged 16-25 can sign up for the eight session course providing them with new practical skills in horticultural conservation, recycling and hands-on bush craft techniques.
SWT’s Youth Rangers can earn accreditations for the National Open College Network and also have their work celebrated through the internationally recognised John Muir Award, an environmental award scheme focused on wild places.
The Youth Ranger’s practical work at the wildlife garden will include the planting of a sensory garden and developing a pond area. The wildlife garden at Stanmer Park provides the Trust with a valuable site in the Brighton area for its ever expanding programme of activities. As well as a variety of SWT events and courses, the garden will also be used by local schools and community groups.
The Viva Veolia project is an England-wide flagship youth volunteering project, delivered by The Wildlife Trusts nationally on behalf of The Veolia Environmental Trust, and v, the youth volunteering charity.
