An Evening with Nightjars
Discover more about the nightjar - one of Britain’s most mysterious birds - with Sussex Wildlife Trust on Tuesday 12 June and on Thursday 21 June.
Nightjars are nocturnal birds rarely seen during daylight. They remain motionless on the ground, relying on their amazing camouflage - plumage that looks like old tree bark - to avoid detection.
People most often encounter the nightjar's distinctive sound. Nightjar means night-churr and males can be heard performing a prolonged churring call in the evening often perched on a prominent branch.
The evening on Tuesday 12 June is in the Ashdown Forest and starts with an indoor session at the Ashdown Forest Centre, Wych Cross, followed by a mile long walk in the forest to hear the birds themselves.
On Thursday 21 June join SWT at Stedham Common near Midhurst. The evening begins at Stedham Village hall followed by a walk on Iping and Stedham Commons.
Both events run from 19:30-22.00. Please bring a torch and insect repellent. Sorry no dogs. Cost for members & concessions £6. Non-members £8. Booking essential please ring Filma Dyer on 01273 497561.
