On Sunday 17 June join Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) and explore the colourful world of dragonflies and damselflies at Woods Mill near Henfield.
Amongst the most ancient of living creatures, dragons and damsels have inspired many myths and legends. Once known as Devil’s Darning Needles it was said that if you went to sleep by a stream on a summer’s day damselflies would use their long, thin bodies to sew your eyelids shut.
Find out more about these fascinating insects on this one-day course. An indoor session covers basic biology, identification tips and the range of species found in the UK, particularly in Sussex. The afternoon is spent out on the nature reserve identifying dragons and damsels such as the broad-bodied chaser, ruddy darter and beautiful demoiselle.
There’s also another opportunity to find out more about these insects with SWT on Sunday 1 July at Amberley Wildbrooks – one of the best places in the country to see a variety of dragonflies and damselfies.
The course at Woods Mill on Sunday 17 June runs from 10:00-16:00. Woods Mill is 1.5 miles south of Henfield on the A2037. Wheelchair access and disabled toilets available. Cost for members/concessions: £22.50. Non-members:£30. Booking essential for both events please ring Filma Dyer on 01273 497561.
