Dr Tony Whitbread has been appointed Chief Executive of Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT). He succeeds Elaine Lambert who left the Trust at Christmas. Previously SWT’s Conservation Director, Tony Whitbread has been Acting Chief Executive since December 2005.
‘We are delighted at Tony’s appointment.’ said Patrick Berry, Chairman of the Trustees at SWT. ‘He is a well respected conservationist who has the full support of the Trustees and staff. His skills and leadership are a valuable addition for the continued success of the Trust.’
Tony joined the Sussex Wildlife Trust in 1991 as Head of the Conservation Department and was employed most recently as the Trust’s Conservation Director. He was a chief contributor to SWT’s Vision for the Wildlife of Sussex (1986) – an ambitious and positive environmental agenda for the county.
On taking up his appointment, Tony Whitbread said, ‘It’s a vibrant and exciting time to be leading the Trust. Our membership is thriving and I’m confident the Trust will remain an effective conservation organisation for Sussex and continue to go from strength to strength.’
Graduating from Hatfield Polytechnic in 1981 with a PhD in Grassland Ecology and a BSc in Applied Biology, Tony has worked for the Nature Conservancy Council and the Royal Society for Nature Conservation (RSNC). Following the storm of 1987 he was appointed the RSNC’s Storm Damage Co-ordinator.
An expert on ancient woodland, Tony Whitbread is also the national spokesman on woodland issues for The Wildlife Trusts.
