Time is running out – that’s the message Elaine Hayes, Chief Executive of the Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT), is highlighting to the Trust’s 16,000 members in the lead up to the General Election on May 5th.
She has asked members to challenge political parties to place the environment at the heart of their policies by asking pertinent questions about their chosen parties plans in specific areas concerning wildlife, conservation and the environment.
SWT has issued its own manifesto in a bid to ensure that in this election environmental issues are not swept under the carpet.
In an eight page document issued today Miss Hayes insists that protecting and ensuring a healthy environment is an issue for everyone, regardless of their political persuasion, and warns that ‘damage to the environment is damage to ourselves’.
The centre pages feature a map of Sussex clearly showing proposals for major new house building development, road improvements, landfill sites and airport expansion. SWT’s manifesto concentrates on four main areas of concern – housing, water, roads and airports. Each theme includes a series of questions to ask your prospective Member of Parliament.
But protecting the environment is not just an issue for Government and the back page includes suggestions that everyone can follow to ‘do their bit’ to help address the growing concerns about the future of Sussex.

In addition to its members the Trust has sent its manifesto to all prospective parliamentary candidates, prospective county councillors and other interested parties.
