Brighton & Hove School Grounds Biodiversity Action Plan Project
From 2006-8 Sussex Wildlife Trust employed a Project Officer to implement this unique Plan, with support from the Countdown 2010 Biodiversity Action Fund and Brighton & Hove City Council. The project was a fantastic success. Here are some of the outcomes:
- 16 schools signed up to School Grounds BAP manifesto
- 60 schools advised on biodiversity matters
- Five schools assisted in obtaining Breathing Places grants
- Demonstration wildlife club developed
- Termly newsletters produced which doubled up as wildlife ID posters
- School grounds habitat mapping CD produced for use by teachers
- A range of practical projects enabled and supported including ponds, outdoor classrooms and wildlife trails
- Two annual Heritage and Environment Festivals for 600 children over 3 days arranged, for children to see their place in the Landscape, past, present and future – one Festival opened by Blue Peter Gardener Chris Collins
- Teacher training initiated as part of Festival for over 100 teachers
- Health and Safety Document for school ponds produced and agreed with Council
- Six school orchards planted using Sussex Apple varieties grafted by National Fruit Collection
- 50 nesting boxes installed as part of BBC Breathing Places
- Big Biodiversity Butterfly Count arranged, including a number of community groups as well as schools and featuring David Bellamy
- Tree planting events organised with organisations such as Tree Appeal and Trees for Cities
- Publicity throughout project from BBC, Argus, Meridian, Southern Counties Radio, and work featured in local and national wildlife publications and case studies
