Sussex Wildlife Trust support the development and use of school wildlife areas.
The key to ensuring a successful grounds project involves
- whole school commitment to and involvement in planning of project
- a management schedule to ensure area is maintained effectively
- staff training to ensure the area is used to its full potential

Initial
site visit and brief report
We will make a short visit to your school grounds and either suggest
ways of developing, managing and using existing wildlife areas or
suggest a way forward for developing a new wildlife area.
Cost: £100

Getting
the children involved
We will spend a day working with a group of children to audit the
wildlife and wildlife features already existing in your grounds,
talk about ways of encouraging new wildlife into the grounds, and
support them as they incorporate their ideas for a wildlife area
into plans.

Drawing up plans
We will produce a scale plan of your wildlife area. This will be
based on designs drawn by the children, ideas from the staff and
wider school community and our own knowledge of wildlife gardening.
We will provide an action plan to help you with the implementation
of your project, including lists of suitable plants, suppliers and
contractors who work in an environmentally aware way.
In order to do this, we may require a plan of your school area,
with details of underground services wherever possible.

Co-ordination
We will liase with the school, grounds contractors and suppliers
to resource, timetable and ensure the smooth running of your project.

Practical help
Through our corporate support, we will arrange and co-ordinate a volunteer team to visit your school for a day to help with the practical implementation of your plans, perhaps creating a pond, planting a hedgerow or helping clear an overgrown area.

Maintenance
We will write a detailed management plan specific to your area to
ensure the school is aware of what to do / when / by whom in order
to keep your area well maintained.
